Four Sierra Nevada Mining Company stock certificates. Issued to Edwards and Cooper and three to H Preston, trustee. The Sierra Nevada Mining Company was part of the "North End" mines of the Comstock Lode, and was staked in 1859. It was located in Seven Mile Canyon below the Utah Mine and was 3550' long. It was a large producing mine of gold as well as silver. Up to the mid-1870s, the old upper workings were profitably reworked. During 1866 to 1933, the reported production was estimated at 197,000 tons which averaged over $9.00 per ton. The mine was in operation intermittently up to the early 1940s. Myron Angel wrote that the mine's stocks was a favorite for "milking the public both in sales of share and assessments." [UNR Special Collections]. One stock has 19 assessment stamps!
