Incorporated under the laws of the State of California, No. LA013041, issued for 10 shares to J. Barth & Co. on October 17, 1936. signed by Robert porter as President and J. Bartel as Secretary. Winfield Bertram “Bert” Kinner founded the company in 1919 to produce radial engines as well as light general and sports aircraft.

In 1922, the city of Glendale, CA bought 33 acres adjacent to the Southern Pacific RR tracks and cleared a 1200-foot runway for the Glendale Municipal Airport. Opened in March 1923, it was the first paved runway of the western US, and the first hangar built was for the ‘Kinner Airplane & Motor Corporation.’ Their engines powered biplanes of the 30’s and Ryan PT-22 USAF trainer during the 40’s.

Amelia Earhart first learned to fly at the Kinner airfield in an OX-5 Canuck, and her plane was designed and built at the Kinner Airfield in Glendale. Kinner went bankrupt in 1937, selling aircraft rights to Timm Aircraft and engine rights to a new Kinner Motors, which produced thousands of engines during World War II. Kinner died in 1958.
