A rare carte de visite of famous American Christopher Houston Carson, better known as Kit Carson. He was an American frontiersman, fur trapper, wilderness guide, Indian agent, and U.S. Army officer. He became a frontier legend in his own lifetime by biographies and news articles, and exaggerated versions of his exploits were the subject of dime novels.
Carson was the main scout during John C. Fremont's expeditions in the 1840's through California, Oregon and the Great Basin.
During the Civil War, he commanded a regiment of mostly Mexican-Americans out of New Mexico for the Union Army.
The photo was taken at Earle's Galleries in Philadelphia. They were know for their portraits of various Union Army Officers and other personalities of the time.
This measures 2.5"x 4" and is pretty crisp and clear in its focus.
