In response, merchants had private minters fill the void. The first appeared in autumn 1862 by H. A. Ratterman of Cincinnati, Ohio. New York followed in the spring of 1863 first with barkeep Gustavus Lindenmueller and then with Knickerbocker currency patriotic tokens issued by Williams H. Bridgens.
