This is a Knight's Templar sword made by William Pettis, of Troy, New York late 1800's. The sword has a black lacquered wood grip worn from use on one side; the other side has an inlay of brass with a red lacquered cross. The pommel is cast, as is the guard, in the shape of a templar's helmet. The gold tone image on one side depicts the history if the templars who secured the holy-land in the 1200's known today as the crusades, and showing a completed King Solomon's temple which today is the wailing wall in Jerusalem, Israel. The other side of the sword has the original owner's name of "Philip Richards" etched in gold tone along with header and footer with the square and compass the tools of operative masons and the compass and level at the footer. This is symbolic of the masonic salutation: "We meet on the level, part upon the square". (ref. quora.com). The scabbard is complete with rings and drag the throat depicts a fallen templar soldier with the quote " Be thou faithful unto death, give thee a crown of life" (Revelation 2:10). A leather carry case is included of later construction. Very good condition. Please see photo for details. 28 in. blade, 35 in. overall length. c. 1800
