This sword is a gold gilded dress sword of the Masonic Knights Templar, sometimes referred to as a "society sword" used in parades and Masonic pageantry. The overall length of the sword is 38 in.; the blade is 30 in. and the scabbard is 32 in. long made by the " E.A. Armstrong MFG Co. 434-440 S. Wabash Ave. Chicago, Ill." so marked on the ricasso. The Armstrong Co. operated in Chicago from Detroit after 1892. The grip is two piece early cellulite simulated ivory with the engraved Christian cross on one side and the letter "H" hand engraved on the other. The name "Jacob Reid." is etched into the blade of the sword and thought to be the original owner. The blade is etched with a chronological story of the original Knights Templar when they were given the responsibility of protecting the Holy Land of the Christian faith; from knights on horseback to King Solomon's Temple. A simple cross guard and knight's helmet as the pommel complete the sword. The scabbard is marked "KT" in the cartouche (Knights Templar) and an emblem on the head is marked with the bible verse " be thou faithful unto death & I will give thee a crown of life" surrounding a crown and Christian cross lightly enameled.
