This Knights Templar sash is white with a black border and two medallions; one with the cross in red velvet and another four pointed cross with the inscription "in hoc signo vinces". The inside liner has an owner's name of R.T. Kelly sewn-in. The Knights Templar is an order in the Masonic Lodge where "IN HOC SIGNO VINCES" means "in this sign thou shalt conquer" as it appeared to Emperor Constantine in the battle of Milvius Bridge in the year 312. This sign was said to be brighter than the sun. This moment in history led to the end of Christian repression by the Edict of Milan giving Christians religious freedom in 313. Today this symbol is used by The Knights Templar, the Kingdom of Portugal, and the Sigma Chi college fraternity, among others. C.19th century. The sash shows age and wear of 100 years. Good overall condition. Please see photo for details.
