Large correspondence group of letters among family members of two primary families, the Shryock and Koons families. The majority of the letters date from 1856 to 1865. About 21 letters cover the civil war years 1861-1865, with two patriotic covers. About two thirds of the letters have original covers. Of particular interest are a group of covers with manuscript postal cancellations from Double Pipe Creek from 1857 to1864, many with the imperf 3c.John Koons appears to have been an MD. The surname is invariably spelled Koonz, Koonze, Koons, Koonts making research a bit more difficult. The family had businesses around Maryland: Lewis a cigar store in Baltimore, Isaac a merchant in Elkton. A "John Koontz" died in Cumberland, MD in 1865. One of the Koons clan was a spiritualist in Athens County, Ohio in 1856. The Shryock family needs more research. The letters are generally familial with some racy comments from time to time, and rare discussions of political events. One of the family later wrote and published a long history of Double Pipe in the Taneytown Record, 1895. The town was 51 miles from Baltimore and 17 miles from Westminster. This is an excellent group of letters for the advanced researcher. Double Pipe Creek Maryland
