First in Humboldt County to dry kiln lumber. Originally called North Fork, renamed to Korbel in 1891 with new post office. Korbel family sold Mad River properties in 1902 to Northern Redwood Lumber. Rail passenger service ended in 1931. Sawmill closed in 1933 and reopened in 1942. Rail service w/ Northwestern Pacific was abandoned in 1985.
