An exceptional rarity. First time offered by us. Pioneer Assay Office of Krause & Reese. Sept. 1862 Memorandum of Bullion for a deposit of 68 ounces by F. Edgerly. .681 fineness. Value $40.80. 4.5 x 10.5" Folds, soiling. Agnew & Deffebach printers, SF. This is right during the time period Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) was trying his luck mining in Aurora. The boom in nearby Bodie would be over a decade away. Krauss (possible correct spelling) & Reese were one of two assay offices in Aurora during the mid-1860s. According to Wasson, Reese stated that his firm "handled about half a million per month for a period of about eighteen months in succession‚" presumably during 1863 and 1864. Frank Edgerly was later involved with the incorporation of the Crystal Water Springs Company in 1864 to help supply Aurora's residents. This is the only one of these you'll probably ever come across!
