LM Jacobs & Co. check issued to WT Rickard and signed by financial investor W. F. (Frank) Witherell on Nov. 21st, 1878. Black print on creme paper with a vignette of an Indian at left. Endorsed by signature on reverse and cancelled with handwritten cancellation and blue stamp on the face. There is a hole in the upper left corner and light staining. Otherwise Fine. W. Frank Witherell, was a businessman and entrepreneur. After the Civil War he became a wholesaler of hides and leather in association with his uncle. In 1880 W.T. Rickard was an assayer in Tombstone. Rickard was a well known southwestern U.S. mining man. Rickard wrote a lecture on the reduction of ores of the Comstock in 1866, and was an important figure in the California Gold Rush, the Comstock and the Tombstone Rush before returning to London in 1881. This is the same Col. Witherell shown on Arivaca assay receipts.
