Sixty postcard from pigeon, ostrich, and alligator farms in the Los Angeles, California, area. 37 color litho, 15 RPPCs, and 8 B&W lithos. Cawston Ostrich Farm began in 1885 when Edwin Cawston shipped 50 ostriches from South Africa to Pasadena by ship and train. Eighteen birds survived the trip, but Cawston eventually had more than 100 ostriches and created a premier tourist attraction. It was located near a trolley line direct from downtown Los Angeles. The farm closed in 1935. The Los Angeles Alligator Farm was coincidentally adjacent to the Los Angeles Ostrich Farm in the Lincoln Heights neighborhood. The alligator farm operated there from 1907 to 1953 when it moved to Buena Park, California. It closed in 1984. This lot of postcards shows the wonders to behold at both attractions along with several cards showing a large pigeon farm in southern California.
