Lot of 76. All are Banking House of LH Hershfield & Bro., Helena, Montana checks issued to Chinese merchants. Includes 57 RN-B, 2 RN-C, and 17 without RN. All are being drawn on the Bank of California in San Francisco. Most are issued to "Gold Coin" with the Chinese merchant listed on the reverse. The checks feature the classic vignette of a prospector with his dog. The LH Hershfield & Bro. Banking House in Helena operated 1865-1882. It was located in Last Chance Gulch, near the corner of Bridge St. and Warren St. It then became the Merchants National Bank from 1882-1898, then Union Bank & Trust Co. 1898-1959. Hershfield also had a banking business in Virginia City, Montana. This is an important collection documenting the central role the Chinese community played in Western mining camps. Helena Montana
