Certificate of Membership for the La Porte Guards, Volunteer Company Infantry, 4th Brigade, C.M. valid for 90 days, issued to A.M.Pecks(?), signed by Captain S.S. Rupell, and J. Gould on Aug 2, 1865. 3 small vignettes, 2 American flags, 1 of an eagle sitting on an American shield. Black border and print by Messenger Print in La Porte. James Gould is listed as resident in Ballyback in 1873. [Ref.: ROTM by J.E. Garvis, p.405] La Porte Guards are officially on the "List of California State Militia civil war units" between 1861-65. From Garvis (2004): 75 citizens of La Port formed the La Porte Guards, part of the volunteer Sierra Brigade. The military company was formally known as the Sierra Greys and Rifles. From Wiki: "In June 1864 a petition from the company was presented to Major C.V. Hubbard who was in command of the Fourth Infantry Battalion, Fourth Brigade, asking that the company be attached to his command. This request was granted and the company became attached to the Fourth Infantry Battalion as Company E, on June 26." From Garvis (2004): The Guards were unable to join 30 other companies expected to attend the Fourth Brigade Encampment at Sacramento because they had not received their uniforms. The Guards were disbanded by Captain Sullivan S. Russel after 1865. Newspapers.com has an obituary for James L. Gould (may not be the same, but location is uncanny), noting that he was a pioneer resident of Dutch Flat and Towle, and one of the first locators in the Dutch Flat section, settling there in 1856, and noting that he was prominent in Placer County and a thoroughly good man.
