In 1854, the Democratic majority State Legislature named modern-day Lake Tahoe "Lake Bigler" in honor of California's third Governor, John Bigler, who was then beginning his second term. However, Bigler became unpopular, especially during the Civil War, and federal map makers changed the name to Lake Tahoe in 1862. Both names were in use throughout the last part of the 19th century, until the California State Legislature officially reversed its previous decision, and in 1945, officially changed the name to Lake Tahoe.

Usually considered to be part of Eldorado County in California, there is a case for the location to be in Douglas County, Nevada. Lengthy discussion of the pros and cons for a California or Nevada location. Either way it is a Rarity-9 with a manuscript postmark on a cover.
