PRE-1910 PASS SIGNED BY DL BLISS.

Very rare early pass for this railroad that operated from Truckee to Tahoe City. This is pass No. 499, issued to Van Horn for the year 1907. It is signed by DL Bliss as president. Bliss died later that year.

Bliss came to California during the Gold Rush. He was not successful as a miner, and headed to Gold Hill, Nevada very early in 1860. There, he partnered with AB Paul in establishing a bank. It was bought out by the Bank of California, and Bliss stayed on, becoming a trusted lieutenant for the "Bank Ring" Crowd (Ralston, Sharon, Mills). With Yerington and Mills, he formed the Carson & Tahoe Lumber & Fluming Company, which harvested lumber at Lake Tahoe to supply the Comstock mines.

With the decline of the mining, Bliss transitioned to tourism. He built this railroad, retrofitted logging steamers for passengers, and built the Tahoe Tavern.

We've only ever had a few of these RR passes with his autograph.
