Very early pass for this railroad! No. 81, issued to A.M. Beal (superintendent of Gila Valley, Globe and Northern Railway) for 1902. Signed by D.L. Bliss as president. Printed on cardstock with light toning and soiling. D.L. Bliss made his fortune by supplying lumber to the mines on the Comstock Lode. His operations at Lake Tahoe included the Carson & Tahoe Lumber & Fluming Company. With the decline in mining in Virginia City in the 1880s and 90s, Bliss realized that his lumber operations would become obsolete. With great foresight, he predicted that Lake Tahoe would become a world-renowned tourist attraction. Pulling up his rail lines on the east side of the lake and buying a small fleet of steamers, Bliss formed the Lake Tahoe Railway & Transportation Company. Inc. in 1898, the rail opened May 1900. The 16-mile track ran from Truckee to the wharf at Tahoe City where passengers could get off the train and get right on one of the steamers owned by the company and tour the lake. Later, the Bliss family built the Tahoe Tavern as the last piece to this tourism experience. After Bliss died in 1907, his sons took over the enterprise. The line was leased by Southern Pacific in 1925, bought outright in 1933 and abandoned in 1943. (Prag Collection) City: Lake Tahoe State: California, Date: Inventory# 39247
