The Austin and Reese River mining district in Lander County was established in 1863 following the discovery of rich silver ore in the area. It remained prosperous until the early 1880's, when mine production decreased and the United States government abandoned the silver standard. Mines of Lander County produced an average of $296.26 per ton and as high as $600-$1000 per ton [Ref: History of Nevada, Davis, 2009, p.925].


1. Roman Brothers Silver Mining Company, inc. 1864 in New York; located Lander County, NV. Cert. no. 379 issued for 10 shares at $100 each to Luther Marsh on Aug 3, 1865. Signed by president James B. Taylor and secretary Benjamin F. Mudgett. Not Cancelled. 2 different underground mining vignettes, ornate black border and print by Ferd. Mayer & Co., NY.
Has the incorporation text printed at the top, not seen before. The mine is not listed in Raymond. According to an 1867 New York court case, the property was located near Austin. The company's 2 ledges of silver ore were called Romulus and Remus, hence the companies name.

2. Consolidated Silver Mining Company, inc. 1876 in New York; located in Reese River and Union District, Nevada. Cert. no 18 issued to Howard F. Gould for 1000 shares on Apr 20, 1866. Signed by John M. Cheen as president and Thomas F. Gould as secretary.
Not cancelled. Black border and print by Slote & Janes, NY. Red brown 25 cent Internal revenue stamp "Power of Attorney" on right, vignette of miners hoisting scene on left side. Very finely detailed center vignette.
Very fine condition!

3. Mettacom Silver Mining Company, inc. 1863 in New York,; located on Reese River, Austin, Lander County, Nevada. Cert. no. 443 issued to Cephas M. Woodruff for 20 shares at $100 each on Feb 18, 1867 in New York. Signed by president F. Mackin and secretary Chas. T. Gray.

The Mettacom mine was located on Lander Hill next to Florida Mine. It was producing regularly from 1866-69. Blake's 1969 report says they had producted 26 tons. The mill ceased to operate by fall 1869. Fuller and Lane refurbished the mill to ue as a custom mill. All the outside ores from the small mines wer going to the manhattan Co.'s mill, and Fuller thought he could force Manhattan tokeep their prices down, if he kept Mettcom open. It worked! A brittish company, The Pacific Mining Co., bought the Mettacom and mill in October 1869; they were eventually bought by the Manhattan Co.in 1876.

4. Manhattan Silver Mining Company of Nevada, inc. in New York; located Austin and Reese River mining district, Lander County, Nevada. Cert. no. 502 issued to Julia G. Smyth for 100 shares on Aug 6., 1873. Signed by Cancelled. Black border and print by Stearns & Beale Stationers, NY. 2 vignette , on in the center of miners working and a second in lower left corner of an arm holding mining tool.
The company was established in Austin in 1863 with H. Augustin Taylor as president and Allen A. Curtis as agent and superintendent. Curtis first purchased the Oregon Milling and Mining Company 's Mill in upper Austin and then wisely bought up many of the areas claims that allowed the company to operate its large mill efficiently. By 1877, the Manhattan Co. owned and operated all the principal mines and mills of the Reese River District! The operations continued until 1887, when falling silver prices not longer supported economic operation. [Ref: 1880 Report of Precious Metal in the United States. Buchard, p97]

5. Phenix Silver Mining Company, inc. 1871; located Lander County, Nevada. Cert. no. 3220 issued to W. G. Crandall for 50 shares on Apr 23, 1879 in San Francisco. Signed by president A. Forbes and the companies secretary. Not cancelled. Black border and print by Lith. Britto, Rey & Co, SF. Central vignette of eagle, reverse has 5 assessment stamps dated 1879-81.
According to Eureka Daily Sentinelin March 26, 1873; this company was located in the Eureka Mining District (located 1864) of Lander County. In 1878, they were filing a patent for a mill site. The curious prospectors took some speciments and ran a tet in their fire. The result caused them to shout "Eureka"and the name became stuk [Ref: Carson, Nevada Place Names, 1974, p.110].
