This book is a TREASURE TROVE for advertising collectors, with hundreds of incredible, very attractive ads, many with great illustrations of the city, buildings, businesses, products, horse-drawn tollies, steam boats, trains, equipment, industrial subject matter, engineering inventions, instruments, factories, foundries, agricultural implements, city street scenes, new patents, and so much more. One ad features a Napoleon Medal awarded to the U.S. by the Paris International Expo Committee on Photographic Landscapes, Received by C. E. Watkins. On page 28 is a Chronological History of Principal Events from 9-1-1868 thru 11-30-1869 with some fascinating entries, such as: Oct. 21 "The most violent earthquake experienced in California since its settlement by Americans, occurred at 7:54 A. M. The first and heaviest sock continued about 45 seconds....." Oct. 27 "The body of an infant, enclosed in a tin case, was found in removing the walls of a bulsind on Ecker Street." Also listed here is the departure of every steamer, it's destination and the $ amount of treasure it carried. Following the Chronology is a General Overview, also filled with fascinating details about the City on the Bay. All inside pages are in excellent condition; no missing pages. Incredible illustrated ads, many on blue paper. Original covers and spine; front board split on outside hinge but still attached and inside hinge fine; backboard split on both hinges but attached. Covers are legible, but spine is badly worn, missing chunks at top and bottom edges, cracked, rubbed, etc. Wear to cover corners, and fading but no rips or holes, other than edges and corners. See photos for condition details. Overall, good condition --holding together, no loose pages, binding still ok. This directory may have originally contained a map. There is no map in this book. A RARE, EARLY Directory.
