This lot has a lot going for it. Langton's Pioneer Express. Samuel W. Langton and N. W. Williams formed Langton's Pioneer Express in March 1855 following the collapse of Adams Express in February. Langton had already been in the express business on his own or with partners since 1850. When started his extensive routes from the mining areas included steamboat service from Marysville and Sacramento to San Francisco. He began connecting with Wells, Fargo at Marysville in 1857 and quit the steamboat route. In early 1865, after the death of Sam Langton in 1864, the firm was sold to Lamping & Co's Express.[Frajola] Both from Quong Wo. One addressed to Hong Wo of Marysville for $170 and the other to Kong Wo of Marysville for placer gold worth $320. Hong Wo & Co., was the largest of several stores in Marysville's Chinatown. He sold a wide variety of Chinese goods, and also supplied the Chinese laborers who performed most of the work of constructing the Marysville Levees. There is some concern that the Kong Wo paper is not authentic, so please inspect. (Potter Collection) Date: 1862 Location: Marysville, California HWAC# 58387
