This territorial cover is mailed to Mr. William H. Russell at Virginia, Nevada Territory. We believe this to be the same WH Russell that was part of the freighting firm Russell, Majors, and Waddell and the Central Overland California and Pikes Peak Express Company which was the parent company of the Pony Express. (However, the 1864 Collins Comstock directory does list another Wm. H. Russell who is working as a clerk for the Gould & Curry Mill.) Cover has blue oval Langton's Pioneer Express, Carson City, tied cancel on 3 cent stamp. Stamped Paid. No contents. 3 x 5.5" Under charter from the Kansas legislature, the Central Overland California and Pikes Peak Express Company started the Pony Express which began operations on April 3, 1860. By utilizing a short route and using mounted riders rather than traditional stagecoaches, they established a fast mail service between St. Joseph, Missouri, and Sacramento, California, with letters delivered in 10 days. Langton's Pioneer Express Company was founded in 1850 and operated in California and Nevada until Langton's death in Gold Hill in 1864.
