This large wooden and leather bellows came from one of more than 300 abandoned mining operations in the vicinity of Hawthorne, Mineral County, Nevada. It is approx 39 inches from the exhaust to the opposite end, 30 inches across between the two iron support pegs, and about 9 inches thick when closed. The leather is present but brittle and split. Bellows like this were built with two chambers, one on each side of a central baffle, so that the bellows could blow air with each up and down motion. This one was likely used beside the small furnace where mining samples were prepared for assaying. See photos for additional design details.
