This is a large frame Bowie knife beautifully made with a water browning finish on the blade. This is a late contemporary made knife sloppily marked "AMES/ MFG CO/ 1890" on the ricasso. Ames Manufacturing Co. was a supplier to the US Army and Ordinance Dept.; the craftsmanship and markings are sub-standard and inconsistent with Ames quality arms products. This knife was made for the tourist trade and many replicas exist in forms marked "1861 Texas", "1861 Macon, Ga." etc. The knife is beautifully finished with an unused edge blade that looks spectacular. A very beautiful knife however, not original. Likely imported from Pakistan or India and improperly marked here in the USA. Please see photos for details. 15.375 in. overall length, 10.125 in. blade.
