Very large t-handled hand auger drill for boring deep holes in large, heavy posts and beams. Circa 19th Century. 3 ft long, with 15" handle. Large hand augers like this were to bore deep holes in heavy wooden timbers and beams used for constructing mine shaft supports, as well as for certain stoping methods involving blasting timber beams. This type of auger was also used during the construction of a mine road to the Erie Mine in Gaston, California, for boring holes for dynamite, in the hard packed rocky earth on the side of a steep grade to clear a ledge with minimal hand shoveling, and to bore holes in large trees to fall them with dynamite so they could be laidd across the road for support. (According to the Handbook of Mining Details Compiled from the Engineering and Mining Journal by the Editorial Staff in 1912) Similar auger drills such as this were commonly used in classic American post and beam barn & house building and on RR ties. This piece is completely hand made. from wrought iron and a hard wood t-handle.
