This is a high quality controlled security assay bag, similar to the one we had a year ago for a Comstock assayer. It is made of heavy duty leather, riveted not sewn. In this manner, either high grade (hence dense and heavy) ore samples or bullion samples could be taken to the assayer directly from the mine/assay/mill office without chance of spillage, and also done in secret. There is a leather strap and metal rings that allow for a firm seal, complete with locking apparatus. It has no markings to indicate any maker, assayer or mine. It measures 11" x 8" and has a brass hasp on the end of a leather strap for a padlock. The sealing leather strap or band has an indication that it was cut and repaired. This can only be caused by someone opening the pouch while the lock was in place. There are also two leather handles. There is a 2”x 4” patch repair that is also riveted. This is a very sturdy handsome piece that would enhance any mining or bank collection. These are so rare that this is only the second example we've seen.
