Lee Sam Fong was a respected and very successful Chinese merchant in Helena. This can be attested to by the quality of people who attested to his character to become a citizen of the United States: Governor Toole, associate justice, assayer, police magistrate, surveyor of the county, and Bishop of the state. His daughters broke new ground. Two were among the first typists in the United States of America. Two were the first women of their race to secure a voting ballot. They were all self-sufficient businesswomen. Lot of about 117. Includes a wide variety of material: newspaper articles, Union Bank for Hkg Currency, Hong Kong & Shanghai Bank, covers including cc of Quan Long Chung of Butte, 10 years of tax records, Lease Agreements, US Liberty Bond envelope (How American!), and a large variety of Montana billheads for items purchased by Lee Sam Fong. There is also a letter to bring Ah For (Fong's's cousin) over from China to go to school. The letter is signed by the Bishop of the State of Montana and Lieutenant Colonel at Fort Harrison. Please inspect this marvelous lot! City: Helena State: Montana Date: 1890-1917 ID: 36323
