This letter from Eliphalet Trask is for volunteers from California to muster into service in Massachusetts in 1862; at the height of the Civil War. It is unclear as to Mr. Trask's political capacity at that time, as he was no longer Mayor of Springfield or Lieutenant Governor of the state. However, he was authorized to form a Second Battalion of Cavalry from California volunteers which he successfully does with 500 men from the Golden State. They were companies: A, E, F, L, and M known collectively as the 2nd Massachusetts Cavalry organized in San Francisco in 1863. The guidon for company A resides in the state house in Sacramento. The letter is in excellent shape along with a photocopy of a volunteer's papers of service. An important document establishing California's participation in the Civil War.
