Single-page letter of introduction for Rebecca Platt Bates, a member of the Cavalry Presbyterian Church in San Francisco, requesting special treatment by the reader. Recovered in 1990 from the Easton Trunk, found in the port-side debris field of the S.S. Central America shipwreck. Dated August 12, 1857, at San Francisco, signed by W. (illegible) ott, Acting Minister. A portion of the letter is missing, but not enough that the contents aren't readable and understandable. Ms. Bates is apparently headed to Jamaica, New York.
