Three letters with three covers written in 1851 by an obviously lonely young miner, who has left his home in Bangor, Maine in search of the elephant. There's one written from the miner's sister, one to the sister and one to his father.
One is a secretive letter (It pleads that his father not reveal the contents) and discusses his plan to send money home. He also complains about the rate of gold exchange and the dispatching of two rattlesnakes near camp. The second is a letter to his sister and he longs to be with her having a long chat. These are all in wonderful condition (The paper feels brand new) and are both postmarked Stockton, California. The third is from his sister, telling him of their father's death from cholera. During research, I found an Aaron A. Colter, who was an age match, doing business in dry goods in Ohio and I surmised that the young miner made good in California and headed east to establish a business.
A great piece of Gold Rush history and in excellent condition.
