Group of 11 letters dated 1864-1876 and prospectus, 1864. Harry baker, Secretary of the company and a realtor, to JWL Brown, the field superintendent in Marietta, Ohio. Early correspondence relates to the acquisition of oil leases and wells. An 1865 letter deals with profit and cash splits among partners. A curious string of correspondence in 1865 regarding the price of gold: "gold falls and the opinion appears to be that if the decline goes much farther there will be a more extensive ruin among merchants than perhaps has ever been known. (3/24/1865) such a state of apprehension of course puts a stop to all hopes of raising money at present..." The letter discusses "retrenching and keeping the company alive until better times".
