A pair of letters from George H. Wilford, a Confederate soldier held prisoner on Johnson's Island in Lake Erie. The letters both date from 1862 and are addressed to his sister. Despite his imprisonment, Wilford doesn't seem to be too distressed; he opens his first letter with a straightforward "You are aware that I am a prisoner, though I fear you do not know where I am" and goes on to tell his sister that "the quarters are excellent, and in fact this is a nice place." The letters provide an interesting firsthand look inside Johnson's Island, which was a notorious prison for Confederate soldiers with more than 15,000 men being held there during the prison's operation. Both letters have some tearing and wear along their creases, but both remain full legible and intact.
