Illustrated letter sheet on double page with numerous scenes (one page printed on full sheet), dated "1856". Includes rare letter. Most known issues are blank. One of a series of pictorial letter sheets published by James M. Hutchings, Methods of Mining illustrates all of the major types of gold mining being done in California by 1855. Four of the illustrations on this sheet were done by one of the most prominent artists working in California during the gold rush, Charles Christian Nahl. Contains twelve vignettes each depicting different methods of mining. The vignette on the lower right shows a Chnese miner with a rocker. Interesting? To the right is a list of sixty-four names of mining localities. This is a rich resource for not only the mining methods used in the early gold rush period but also the list of mining localities (Shirt Tail Bend, Jackass Gulch, Pot Luck City, Sam Town, etc.). Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1855, by Jas M. Hutchings, in the Clerk's Office of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. Published by J. M. Hutchings, San Francisco."--text, below image. Blue paper. [Baird, 107] Some discoloration, especially along deep folds. Which prospects will and bids fair to yield us good pay for our work.” He goes on to describe the details of the claims. Written by George W. Wilson to family in Nashville, Tenn.
