Unused. Copied from a daguerreotype sketch by Justh & Quirot Lithographer. No printer shjown, but thought yo be Britten & Rey. Double sheet letter. A miner and an Indian at left middle lower left respectively. The scene at the top (the largest of three illustrations) shows a group of 10 miners operating Long Toms and panning in a stream surrounded by forest and a few buildings in the background. The Long Tom was an 8 to 20 foot rocker. Miners would shovel dirt into it, pour water over it, and rock it like a cradle. Lighter dirt and gravel was washed away, leaving heavier gold. This picture shows miners using the Long Tom. Middle of sheet, near left edge, miner with shovel, axe and pan; below, an Indian chief sitting down; the whole enclosed in a branch and leafy border. Number “25” in top right corner. Earlier than Feb. 29, 1852. Copies of this image located by Baird [159]: 1 institutional; 3 private. 10 x 7-3/8 inches on a single sheet of white wove paper.
