Cert. #439 issued to George H Dickerman for 4,000 shares. Signed by James A. Woodbury, president, and O. Terry, secretary. Vignette top right of miners underground working rock faces. Black border and print. 4.5 x 8.5". Incorporated in New York in 1866. Underground mining vignette. Outside of a few pinholes and one light fold in the upper left corner, a very nice specimen. This is one of the notable mines of White County. The county was organized in 1857 from part of Habersham County, which in turn was established in 1818 from Indian treaty lands. White County formed a boundary between the Cherokee and Creek Indian nations. In the late 1820s gold was discovered along the Nacoochee River (also known then as Duke's Creek), and that initiated the Great gold Rush of that area. Nine gold mines operated in White County during those years and remained profitable until 1940. [Ref:scotsirish.blogspot.com/2007/.../first-american-gold-rush.html ].
