The Liberty Silver Mine was the major producer in the San Antonio District in Nye County. [Reese River Reveille, J Ross Browne "Mineral Resources of the United States] The San Antonio Mining District was also known as San Antone, Liberty (as in this stock certificate), Royston, Cimarron, Potomac, and San Lorenzo. It was discovered and organized in 1863. district was located in a low range of mountains that lie across the south end of Smoky Valley. Very early number 4, issued for 5 shares to J.V.B. Perry. Signed by the president, Geo. Seitz, and secretary, Byneman. Perry was the Virginia City Marshall at the time this stock was issued. He would become a saloon owner in Virginia City, Hamilton and Eureka. Seitz would be recognized in Browne's work as the president of the mine in 1867. This stock certificate says the company was incorporated in May of 1864. It is handwritten which is very unusual. Datelined Austin, June 29th, 1864. Not cancelled. Vignette of an allegorical woman with an American flag and shield (left side). Printed by W. B. Cooke & Company, San Francisco. 25 cent United States adhesive stamp attached bottom left. Pen cancelled. Folds, crease on right edge, small tear, some soiling. Additional information on Perry and the mine is included. Several newspaper articles from the period are included.
