Lillie James (1885-1948) made this fabulous Washoe basket woven of willow, redbud, and bracken fern root over a single-rod foundation. The design features a series of birds, crossed logs (Swastika) and diamond shapes circumscribing the body. 10" diameter, 6" high. Lillie was the daughter of Lucy Frank (basket maker) and Charley Frank; sister of Lena Dick (basket maker), Jessie Frank Wade (basket maker), Yaddie Frank; wife of Willie James; mother of Carl James, and Velma McBride. Lillie and her sister Lena often wove side-by-side. Excellent condition! Provenance: Dorothea Davis, First dietician for the State of Montana.
