Five autographs of contemporaries of Abraham Lincoln: 1) Matthew Simpson (1811-1884) Methodist minister who delivered eulogy at Lincoln's burial in Springfield, Illinois. Clipped signature (4 x 1 1/2 inches): "Yours Truly / M. Simpson / Dec 24th 1874". Slight show through of mounting. 2) John G. Nicolay (1832-1901) President Lincoln's personal secretary clipped autograph (3 1/2 x 1 inch). 3) Joseph Holt (1807-1894) prosecutor of assassination conspirators, accused of suppressing evidence and keeping from President Johnson the military commission's recommendation of clemency for Mrs. Mary Surratt (the first woman executed by the federal government). Signature: "J. Holt, Judge Advocate General 1865". 3 x 2 inches. 4) Tom Taylor (1817-1880) dramatist most remembered for his play "Our American Cousin," which Lincoln was watching at Ford's Theatre. Signature on 3 x 1 1/2 inch paper. 5) William H. Herndon (1818-1891) law partner of Abraham Lincoln in Springfield, and his biographer. Signature at the upper corner of Contents page from a book (5 1/2 x 9 inches).
