Caleb Blood Smith (1808-1864) seconded Lincoln's nomination for President at the 1860 Republican National Convention in Chicago, and was rewarded with the position of Secretary of the Interior (1861-1863). This three and a half page legal pleading is dated September 27, 1837 and signed twice "Caleb B. Smith" and "C. B. Smith," as solicitor. 8 x 12 1/2 inches; Fayette County, Indiana: "To the Judges of the Fayette District Court in Chancery sitting " a legal pleading on behalf of his client, Jonathan Whiteman, requesting that a lawsuit be brought over a land dispute. General toning; occasional ink stains, overall very good condition.
