Two 10 x 7 inch, glossy black and white photographs of the Lincoln assassination conspirators hanging from the original negative of Alexander Gardner. At the Old Penitentiary in Washington, D. C., July 7, 1865 around 1 p.m. Mary Surratt, David Herold, George Atzerodt and Lewis Paine were executed by hanging. The first picture shows the hangman, Christian Rath (in the white coat and hat) making preparations. The second pictures the dangling corpses and onlookers. After the trap sprung and the condemned dropped, Rath noted "They bounded up again like a ball attached to a rubber band and settled down."
