This is a ledge labelled on spine as the tax receipts for Lincoln County. Inside are 13 used stubs, issued to North Homestake Mining Company, WS Redding, Wm. York, and others. These are actually 1893 receipts being used for 1894. There are also over 200 unused receipts. Printed by Eagle Printing House, White Oaks. Ledger is 10 x 12" Lincoln County was the site of the Lincoln County War (1878-1881) which involved outlaw figures such as Billy the Kid, Jesse Evans Gang, John Kinney Gang, and Sheriff William J. Brady. The conflict began between two factions competing for profits from dry goods and cattle interests in the county. The older, established faction was run by James Dolan, who operated a dry goods monopoly through a general store. English-born John Tunstall and his business partner Alexander McSween opened a competing store in 1876, with backing from established cattleman John Chisum. Each side gathered lawmen, businessmen, Tunstall's ranch hands, and criminal gangs to their cause.
