Edwards Pierrepont (1817-1892) served as Abraham Lincoln's personal advisor before and after Lincoln was elected president. He was appointed by Abraham Lincoln to try the cases of those who had been imprisoned in the North for suspected disloyalty to the Union cause. In 1867 he was chosen to prosecute John Suratt, one of the assassination conspirators. President Grant appointed him attorney general (1875), and later minister to Great Britain. Offered here is a six page handwritten letter ( 4 1/2 x 7 inches), written from the Hotel Vendome, Paris, July 17, 1879 to Rev. Thomas R. R. Stebbing (1835-1926) the naturalist and theological writer. The letter concerns his son Edward moving to England where he will encounter the young mens habits of "smoking and drinking wine."
