Whitehead-Hoag bronze Lincoln essay medal in original case presented by Illinois Watch Company, Springfield. Sculpted by Charles Hinton, 75 mm. Hinton studied at the Cooper Union and the National Academy; won a scholarship to study in Paris under Jean-Leon Gerome at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Returning the United States in 1901, Hinton began teaching at the National Academy, became dean in 1938, a position he held until 1948. He is best known for his designs on medals honoring Charles Lindbergh and Abraham Lincoln.
