Sheriff of Sangamon County Garrett Elkin for over 15 years, Abraham Lincoln used his services to serve writs and summonses. This oblong receipt (8 x 2 inches) dated 1836 has Elkin's signature as Sheriff having received County Tax from Coleman Smoot, a prosperous New Salem farmer. After Lincoln was elected to the state legislature, learning that Smoot had supported him, he borrowed $200 from him, and spent $60 on a new suit for his role as a legislator, the first suit Lincoln had ever owned. Toned, chip out of the center bottom.
