Lt. Col. Henry W. Smith arrested Mary Surratt and Lewis Payne at the Surratt home on April 17, 1865 and shared in the posted reward money for their capture. This two page, Smith signed document from the War Department Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Land, Washington, is dated June 12th, 1866 and signed by General Oliver Otis Howard; endorsed by Smith July 10. 7 1/2 x 10 inches, folded. Also an 1862 Henry W. Smith signed letter from Head Quarters Casey's Division to a General requesting the date of the commission as Brigadier General. Smith signature is rare in private hands, yet he was a major part of the Lincoln Assassination story.
