Doctor Samuel A. Mudd set John Wilkes Booth's broken leg after Lincoln's assassination. He was tried as a conspirator and sentenced to prison. This was the source of the saying: "His name is Mudd." Two generations later, his family was still trying to clear his name. This is a first day cover of the Lincoln four cent stamp issued May 28, 1966 addressed to Dr. Richard D. Mudd, grandson of the convicted Mudd. Autographed by Richard D. Mudd MD. In the envelope are three newspaper and magazine articles about the family trying to clear the family name.
