John T. Stuart (1807-1885) lawyer and politician in Springfield, Illinois; member of U. S. Congress. After making the acquaintance of Abraham Lincoln during the Black Hawk War, he influenced the future president to become a lawyer, lending him law books and took him as partner in his law practice when Lincoln was admitted to the bar. Their friendship was life long. Partially printed Certificate of Scholarship in the Illinois State University with Stuart's signature as president. Two partial horizontal center fold separations at right and left edge; age toning, light wear and wrinkling; 15 x 9 inches unfolded.
