Margaret "Maggie" Mitchell (1832-1918) prominent stage actress was a close friend (and possible lover) of John Wilkes Booth, Lincoln's assassin. Mitchell was considered a star performer as early as 1851. She sponsored Booth's first benefit performance. The two actors worked on stage with various companies from 1858-1861. Mitchell reportedly danced on the American flag as a defiant show of support of the South. She also earned the admiration of Abraham Lincoln, who invited her to tea in the Executive Mansion and enjoyed her performances at Ford's Theatre. Here is a carte de visite photograph ( 2 1/4 x 4 inches) showing the actress full length while seated. Reverse: Alex Gardner Galleries of Washington D.C. Uneven lightening but very good condition. Also an autographed card: "Yours truly / Maggie Mitchell / April 27th 1904". Faint toning, a clear example signed just one year before Booth killed Lincoln.
