Rare handwritten letter of the star of "Our American Cousin" who was performing onstage the night of Abraham Lincoln's assassination. One page, on a blue lined leaf measuring about 3 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches, dated July 8, 1866 from Amherst, Massachusetts: "Sir / I regret indeed your letters did not reach me before I have made my arrangements for next season. Hope to meet you on some other occasion. / Truly Yours / Laura Keene" New York theatres had closed due to the Civil War, so Keene moved to Washington D.C. to perform Tom Taylor's comedy "Our American Cousin." Keene was in the lead role the infamous night and was waiting off stage for a cue when the President was shot by John Wilkes Booth. After Booth leaped to the stage he pushed Keene aside and ran towards a back exit. She entreated the audience "For God's sake, gentlemen, be quiet, keep cool," as she helped a man up over the side of the presidential box. Minor soiling in the center of the page, and some adhesive on the reverse from previous mounting, otherwise, fine readable condition. The carte de visite is 2 1/4 x 4 inches published by O. A. Roorbach, 122 Nassau Street, New York.
