Edward P. Doherty (1837-1897) led the 16th NY Cavalry that captured John Wilkes Booth. A RARE autograph. Enlisting at the age of 24 in New York City as a 1st Lieutenant in the New York 71st, in 1863 he joined the NY 16th Cavalry. Doherty is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. He concluded his military deposition: "In conclusion I beg to state that it has afforded my command and myself inexpressible pleasure to be the humble instruments of capturing the foul assassins who caused the death of our beloved President and plunged the nation in mourning." A very scarce signature with rank, bold on a 4 x 1 1/2 inch slip. Mounting remnants on reverse.
