Major Augustus Henry Seward, son of the Secretary of War William H. Seward, was wounded by Lewis Powell as he defended his father from Powell's knife attacks on April 14, 1865, the night of Lincoln's assassination. Augustus suffered seven stab wounds and remained in Washington until 1868, where he testified at Powell's trial, and performed staff duties while recovering from his wounds. He continued to serve in the Army until May 1876 at Boston; New York City and as paymaster at several posts. This special Order No. 41 was issued August 13th, 1870 and signed by Captain Jacob Kine and A. H. Seward certified it a true copy.
